Food Waste

I've been monitoring my garbage, and I'd say that 90% of the waste I produce comes from food.
  • Packaging
    • Plastic
      • Plastic Wrap
      • Plastic Bottles
    • Non-plastic packaging
  • Boxes
  • Coffee Grounds
  • Food peels/rind/skins
  • Tin Cans
  • Glass jars/bottles
I'm sure there are more categories for waste, but that's all I can think of right now. Now, most of those items are recyclable or compostable. IF you live in an area that you can easily recycle these items, that's great; I unfortunately don't.

What can I change about this? A lot. Will it be easy to make these changes? Not really. Lauren Singer does a great job of talking about the changes she has made to reduce the waste she makes - http://www.trashisfortossers.com/

So identifying the problem is the first step towards a solution. I've identified where most of my waste comes from. Brainstorming solutions is next.

Going Back to Engineering?

As I've been job searching, part of me has considered going back to be an engineer. An engineering job would pay well, and would most likely be stable. BUT, this isn't the career field I want. I wasn't happy as an engineer, especially when I had a boss that bullied me. I know that a lot of engineering jobs are great, and have a great work environment. I'm just not ready to go back yet.

My job applications/interviews haven't been going as expected. I have enough life experience now to not be totally surprised by this, but some of it has still caught me off guard. I have spent a lot of time working on my resume, cover letters, and work itself to show that I'm a good, quality employee. I haven't been getting the response back from employers that I had been hoping for.

I shouldn't give up on jobs and take the safe route back to engineering. I don't even know if I'd be competitive anymore in an engineering job.

Job searching sucks. It's stressful and makes you lose confidence in yourself.

I need to stay positive and keep working towards my career Mission.

Mitch

What I've Been Doing

I haven't posted in a while since I've posted, and I'll explain why.

  • The beginning of January started my work for applying for a new job.
  • I started my last semester of graduate school.
  • I had some pretty major maintenance issues with my apartment.
  • Due to the maintenance issues, I had to sleep in a different place.
  • I didn't sleep well, and the stress/lack of sleep got me sick.
  • I got a sinus infection and that knocked me out for about 4-5 days.
So pretty much all of 2017 so far has been kicking my butt. It's been filled with work, class work, and job hunting. Applying for jobs takes forever. I really want to get into a normal groove again, and blogging is a part of that.

I haven't made a whole lot of progress towards Minimalism, Investing, Technology, Conservation, or Health. I'm hoping blogging again will help me improve again on those areas.

I haven't bought any new stocks since my last stock purchase update. I don't have much extra money to invest right now, so I've just been watching  dividend payments get paid to my Robinhood account.

So this is a brief update, but I will be blogging regularly again.
