Investing Update 4/29/2016

I was tired of holding Disney stock. I sold it. I was tired of not having my 2016 stocks purchased. So I bought them. I'd like to give a shout out to Robinhood - https://robinhood.com/. I've really never had any problems with the app, even on my old phone. I'm so glad I don't have to $9.99/trade anymore.

Click this link to see my current portfolio, and all of the stocks I added this week!

Year-To-Date Update

1/1/20164/29/2016Change since Jan 1st
Robinhood Portfolio Value$607.87$1,590.09$982.22
Money from my pocket$550.00$1,475.00$925.00
Dividends$9.79$17.98$8.19
Gains/Realized & Unrealized$48.08$97.11$49.03

Robinhood Portfolio Value = (Money from my pocket) + (Dividends) + (Gains/Realized & Unrealized)

Dividends

I received one dividend this week from Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS) stock. I received a dividend payment of $0.57.

Stock Purchase

I bought a lot of stocks this week, and I now have 27 stocks in my Robinhood portfolio.

26 stocks * 4 dividend payments/year = 104 payments
1 stock * 12 dividend payments/year = 12 payments

Total = 116 payments/year.

 365.25 days/year / 116 payments/year = 3.14 days/payment.

This means that on average, I'm getting a dividend payment every 3.14 days. That's neat!

2016 Investing Missions

  • Purchase and hold 25 different stocks that pay dividends: 27/25 - 100% Completed!!!!!!
  • Receive $75 in dividends: $15.09/$75.00 - 20.12% Completed. The year is 33.06% completed, so currently, I am not at the pace needed to complete this yearly Mission.

Sorting Through Papers

I worked on sorting through my boxes of papers tonight. I ended up finding some important papers/documents that I had been looking for. With all of the moving I've done in the past 3 years, I'm not mad that I haven't been more organized. Every time you move it completely uproots your life. Moving forward, I just need to keep some dedicated folders for important papers.

Keeping this sustainable, I need to regularly check these folders for files I don't need anymore. There is no point for these dedicated folders if they start amassing a bunch of papers.

I still have progress to make with my papers, but I feel good about what I accomplished tonight. Getting rid of old mortgage papers feels wonderful.

Sustainability Struggles

I struggle to think about what I can do to help the earth. I know what should be done, but it's tough to actually make things happen. Throwing stuff in the trash is a lot easier than recycling it (most of the time). I like to take showers longer than I should. I run a fan at night for noise, and that could be considered wasted electricity (although it helps me sleep, so I don't care).

Thinking long-term, what would sustainability look like for the average person? Ideally, this is what it'd look like for me -

  • I'd wake up in the morning and take a shower with water that was heated by a solar panel on my roof.
  • I'd go to work in a self-driving car by Google, that knows to come pick me up every day. I would not own this car, but would pay per use.
  • I'd be able to recycle all of my lunch items, and compost any leftover food waste.
  • I'd ride home in a self-driving car by Google.
  • I'd make dinner with vegetables grown from my own garden, or neighborhood community garden.
  • I'd play video games using electricity from a local community solar panel co-op.

Some of these things will take time, infrastructure, and a culture change. We can speed these items up the more we're involved in it now.

Robinhood Instant

I got Robinhood Instant today. I haven't set it up yet, as today was decently busy. I am going to see how it works tomorrow, and I am really excited. I may video record how it looks and works, and potentially upload it for you to see.

I am still very impressed with the Robinhood team. I feel like they've done so much in the past couple of years. I read the Robinhood subreddit often, and there's a lot of people frustrated with Robinhood.

So I'm excited, and I need to make a game plan for how tomorrow is going to happen. Yahoo Finance, barchart.com and nasdaq will be my close friends tomorrow.

No Alcohol for 1 Year

I've successfully gone 1 year without drinking any alcohol. I was never an alcoholic, but after drinking too much at a retirement party for a co-worker, I decided I was done. It might be uncommon for someone my age to not drink alcohol. To be honest, I feel great about it. I feel more authentic and true to myself. There have only been a few times in the past year where it's been tempting, but other than that, I haven't been interested in drinking alcohol.

There are three things for this blog that not drinking helps with.

1. Minimalism - I need less storage for the actual alcohol, beer/wine/shot glasses. Less clutter with cleaning up these items too.

2. Investing - Alcohol is expensive. I'm saving money that I can use to buy stocks.

3. Health - Fewer wasted calories.

I am going to continue not drinking alcohol.

Remaining Flexible and Vigilant

It's important to remind myself to stay flexible with living conditions. I've started to feel settled in my apartment, but you never know when the next change is around the corner. I've learned that one of the biggest keys to controlling your life is being flexible with moving.

I realize that if you are married, have a committed partner, and/or have kids, you're not as flexible with moving. I can't really speak for having those commitments in life. I just know that right now, I'm still able to be pretty flexible. I just need to remain vigilant against being too comfortable.

It's been nice to feel settled for awhile, but this can lure me into a trap. I haven't been as focused on getting rid of stuff in the past couple of months, and I'm not making much progress towards my 2016 Minimalism Mission. Also, my office is work is becoming "filled" with stuff. I need to pare down some of my items, and make sure I can pack up my stuff within 10 minutes. I don't plan on getting fired any time soon, but I think it's still a good standard to have.

I need to keep working on my minimalism goals so I can remain flexible!

Investing Update 4/10/2016

I sold my Apple stock this past week on my $9.99/trade stock brokerage. After all of this time using Robinhood, it took me a while to become reorientated with the $9.99/trade brokerage. I really value the simplicity that the Robinhood App has.

You'll see in my update below, I'm getting very close to getting Robinhood Instant. I have a feeling I'll be getting it this week. This works out well, because when I transfer my $ from my Apple stock sales, that money will be "instantly" available to trade with.

My run with being a vegetarian

I probably went a full month without eating any land-animal meat, and only had fish when eating meat. I tried being a pescatarian (I still don't know how to spell it), and it was pretty tough. I had a dream about eating a steak, and I decided that was enough.

I don't have a huge problem with eating beef, from an animal well-being point of view. Cattle get to be outside, graze, and walk around. They at least have a halfway decent life before being slaughtered. Chickens and hogs do not have quality lives.

I'm still not going to eat pork or chicken, but I am going to eat beef. I wasn't eating much due to animal well-being problems and environmental problems. I think in the next 100 years we'll be eating synthetic meat, and both of these problems will be eliminated. Until then, I'll do what I can.

Three months are already completed in 2016. It's kind of sad to think about. I just want to remind myself and you to enjoy each day and to try to not look to the future so much.
